RICH HISTORY
Palacio Salvo is the most recognized and most photographed building in Montevideo. The
cruise ships bus their guests to the plaza in front of Palacio Salvo to photograph the building.
Some of the most historic sites are located within walking distance of Palacio Salvo. Palacio Salvo
has a long history, originally built as a hotel in the 1920s at the height of Montevideo’s Economy
and Culture. Palacio Salvo is constructed on top of Confiteria Giralda, where the iconic
Tango “La Cumparsita” was written and first played. Confiteria (café) Giralda was a local hangout
for tango legend Carlos Gardel, although, he often frequented the "Fun Fun" bar just down the street.
The building is situated one block away from Tetra Solis, and numerous bars and restaurants.
The old city gate is also across Plaza Independencia where the mortal remains of the founder of
Uruguay General Artigas are located. La Rambla or the seaside pedestrian walkway is located
within 2 blocks. Recently the Condominium value has appreciated due to the new government
building across the plaza and will continue to increase in value with subsequent Old City revitalization.
